The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) together with the Pharmaceutical Association of Thailand (PAT) are pleased to welcome all to the 2014 FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Bangkok, Thailand!

The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP)

Founded in 1912, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) is the global federation of national associations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists and is in official relations with the World Health Organization (WHO). Through its 127 Member Organisations FIP represents and serves more than two million practitioners and scientists around the world.

Both internal and external forces are steering the course of modern healthcare and in turn how each profession can best contribute to it. Recognising this fact, FIP has developed a new Vision, Mission and Strategic Plan with the goal of firmly integrating the Federation and those it serves in global healthcare decisions and actions.

Local Host Committee

The Pharmaceutical Association of Thailand under Royal Patronage (PAT) is the co-host for FIP Bangkok 2014 in partnership with a wide range of pharmacy organisations in Thailand. The Local Host Committee is representative of all sectors in Thai pharmacy.

Pharmacy Practice in Thailand

Formal pharmacy education and training began in Thailand in 1913, with the first pharmacy school established within the Campus of Chulalongkorn University, one of Thailand most renowned educational institutes. In the early days, pharmacy was a four-year based curriculum, increasing to a five-year programme in the early 1960's and transformed into a six-year, Pharm-D study in 2009. This six-year curriculum is mandatory and applied to all universities that offer pharmacy education.  Currently there are eighteen accredited pharmacy faculties or schools nationwide.

There are almost 30,000 registered pharmacists in Thailand practicing in different fields, with the majority in hospitals in both government and private sectors.

Hospital pharmacists constitute approximately one third of the total number of Thai pharmacists, followed by pharmacists practicing in the pharmaceutical industry in different specialized areas of responsibilities, namely production, QC/QA, sales and marketing, regulatory affairs, formulation and research and development.

Community pharmacists take third place, engaging one third of pharmacists in the country, and those in education, public health and consumer protection, military and police and State enterprises comprise the remainder.

Thai pharmacists are renowned for their excellent business and management skills and often rise to the ranks in industry as CEOs, Presidents and Managing Directors in not only pharmaceutical companies but many other health related industries such as diagnostics, medical devices, hospital supplies and consumer health foods. Many within the education sector have moved up to the top post as University Rector or President.

All Thai pharmacists are greatly looking forward to welcoming the participants of the 2014 FIP Congress in Bangkok to learn more about pharmacy in Thailand and to experience the wonderful Thai hospitality!
